Successful eBay Sellers Do Their Homework First

Do you want to be an eBay Powerseller? The amount of research you're willing to do before you list your items will have a huge impact on whether or not you're a successful seller. Before a Powerseller lists any items for sale on eBay, they already have a very good idea of how well an item will sell, and the kind of price they can expect to get.

They've also done a little detective work on the competition, to put themselves in the best possible position for a successful sale. A profitable online auction business doesn't happen by accident. Here's a few insider tips that can make the difference between being an eBay Powerseller or an eBay hobby seller.

Regardless of what the item is that you're planning on putting up for auction, chances are someone has already listed the same item or sale on eBay at some point. If that point in time was within the past few months, then you'll find a lot of really useful information on eBay that can help you sell your item. Perform a search using all the keywords you can think of to identify the item, but in this case you'll want to search for ended listings - not current ones. You can find out several useful facts this way, for example whether or not sales of your item are generally successful, what listing options previous powersellers used, the length of the auction, and what the average ending sale price was. These are all things that can affect the success of a sale. So if other sellers in the past have successfully sold the item you plan to list, then why reinvent the wheel? Unless you have some insight into why you should do it any differently, simply copy what you know has worked in the past.

You can also use this search tool to look for intel on your competition. This time, look for items like yours that are currently listed on eBay. When you find one, just click on the seller's ID number. Ideally, you want to find a seller who sells items like yours on a regular basis, especially someone who has figured out how to sell them successfully overall. Pay attention to how many of their auctions were successful, and how many weren't, and then closely compare them. You can often learn just as much from what someone else did wrong as you can from what they did right. Did they use any particular listing options, and what effect may it have had on the results of their auction? Is the competitor you're researching a Powerseller, and if they are, do you think you can replicate what they did?

If you discover that the competition you're spying on isn't a Powerseller, have they been unsuccessfully trying to sell items like yours for some time? If so, then you should consider it a warning that you may want to consider selling something different. There may be a very good reason why no Powersellers are listing the item.

On the other hand, if you compare the stats of several different sellers and see that there is a modest level of success, then see if you can find something that they're doing wrong. It might turn out to be a very lucrative item in the right hands. Not everything that you list on eBay is guaranteed to result in a successful sale, but with the right research - and a little luck - you could be the next eBay Powerseller.
