Secrets to Starting a Successful Online
Auction Business

Perhaps you've been thinking about starting an online auction business in order to make some extra money. Thousands of people have done exactly that, while working at home in their PJs. But building a successful small business as an eBay seller isn't something that happens by accident.

There are a lot of things you need to learn first, unless you want to be out of business your first week on the job. For instance, where do you find things to sell? What steps should you take to make sure that your new business will not only survive, but thrive? What you need to know could fill a book, but here are some ideas to get you pointed in the right direction.

This might seem basic, but first you should probably ask yourself exactly why you want to start an online auction business. Are you hoping to earn a little extra spending money? Or are you hoping to build a business that will earn enough for you to quit your day job? If your goal is simply to earn a little extra money each month, then you can probably approach your business with a slightly more casual attitude. But if your goal is to build a business that can support you, you can't afford to be casual. In fact, if that's what you want then you should start by writing out a business plan after doing some in depth research about the online auction business. Those eBay Powersellers whose footsteps you want to follow in didn't get there with a lackadaisical attitude toward their business.

Once you've sold all the unwanted items from your garage, attic and basement, and your friends' and relatives' garages, attics and basements, then you'll need to find products to keep your auction business going. Right now it might seem like you'll never get rid of all your clutter, but the day will come when you'll be desperately looking for more things to sell. This is precisely where many online auction businesses begin to fail.

Too many people fall for the hype about drop shipping. Theoretically it sounds great. You sell something you don't own, collect the payment and forward a percentage to the shipper, and they ship it to your customer. What could be easier? You don't have to ship anything and you don't have to store any inventory. There are even companies who will find drop ship items for you to sell by the thousands, and all you have to do is pay them a small monthly fee. Before you get too excited, do some research first. Find out what an item is actually selling for on eBay and determine whether or not you can actually make a profit from the transaction. Once you've paid your eBay fees, the drop shipper and that small monthly fee, you may be disappointed by what's left.

New eBay sellers come and go on a regular basis, so what can you do to make sure your auction business survives? The answer is unbelievably simple, although it's not necessarily easy: treat it like a real business. Do some in depth research on auction selling, and keep an eye on your competition. Find out what successful sellers are doing and copy their strategies, and find out what other sellers did wrong so that you can avoid their mistakes. Read everything you can about product trends before you decide to sell an item.

An online auction business can be one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do, or it can be a huge disappointment. Which one it will become is up to you, and depends the amount of research and planning you do before you begin.
