Affiliate Marketing Methods

With a lot of advances made in marketing and product promotion, there is one field that is suitable to just about anyone who has an Internet connection, and knows how to play by the rules of the Worldwide Web, and this new marketing method is called affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing usually refers to the process of finding sponsors for a website. Sometimes individual businesses have their own affiliate or sponsor program, and sometimes they belong to a network where dozens of different companies offer online marketing campaigns. When a person signs up with these programs, and then get accepted, they become an affiliate of the company.

People can argue the exact definition, but four type of programs are most common. When the person signs up, he or she will be able to find code to place on their websites. Sometimes the code is a simple text link with a unique code embedded. The code is used to make sure that the person gets credit for their own efforts. Beyond text links, some advertisers offer banners and other creative materials to use.

Affiliate Marketing Program Types:

  • PPS means Pay Per Sale. If a visitor clicks and advertisement on the site, and then makes a purchase from the sponsor site, the webmaster will be credited with some percentage of the sale.
  • PPL means Pay Per Lead. If a visitor clicks through, and then fills out a lead form, the affiliate will get a fixed amount for each specific type of lead. Sometimes this is also called Pay Per Action or PPA.
  • PPC means Pay Per Click. The advertiser will pay the website owner for simply sending new visitors to their website, and they will pay for each one.
  • PPI means Pay Per Impression. Some advertisers who want to build their product's brand awareness will pay every time their own advertisement is displayed on a website, even if no action is taken.
  • Now you may wonder why type of program will work the best for your website. In general, the more a visitor has to do, the more you will be paid. However, the type of program that will generate the most money for each individual website depends upon the skills of the webmaster, and the type of product that is being advertised. If your website gets lots of traffic, but it is mostly from people looking for information, you may do better with an impression based payment structure. If your website is very targetted towards a particular subject, and visitors are looking for something to buy, then you may want to get a larger commission by actually selling products.

However, many webmasters find that the middle ground works best for them. They send leads to companies, and then let companies close the sale, or they get paid to send visitors to other websites where the sales process really starts. So a new webmaster may want to consider a PPL or PPC program at first, and then experiment with other types of programs.

Affiliate marketing is a great business, but just like any other work, it takes an investment of time, and sometimes, money. New webmasters will have a learning curve, and many give up during the first few weeks. However, most of the online marketers who make a good living will tell you that their business did not take off in the first month or two, but took several months to develop. Overnight success is usually years in the making!
